Hi, Today my main Seagate external hard drive that has everything in my life memories, courses I've just bought for a month or two to watch and record or download then cancel membership, or downloaded over the years from websites that are no longer existed, and many software arranged in folders with keys etc and others stuffs I am still can not even recall now till i need it later ... just all of the sudden just dead! Not detectable and a continuous beep. I take it as it is ok and cool, but deep inside I am really very angry and upset as this hardware has things since 1998, and I copied it from different sources over the years and it is well organized according to my personal and work needs. So I think it is time to have a real backup, and after goggling I found this NAS "Network Attached Storage" thing, and there are too many paid hardware but I can not afford it. With more search I found that many are doing the DIY NAS "Do It Yourself Network Attached Storage" using an old computer and connect as many hard drive as possible according to how many hard drives the computer can hold regarding space on the case and the motherboard connectors, and sometimes they add an extra PCI or PCI Express card that has extra connectors, and some others add the PCI card that can hold several NVMe that may hold 4 or 6 drives. I have an old Dell Precision T3500 with a Xeon W3690, 3.47 GHZ, 24 GB Rams and I am considering using it for this NAS. There are two main approaches I've found after a lot of searches, which is to use a paid operating system for this NAS or to use the open source one, so also which approach to stick to here for the long run. Another issue is that I am still did not bought the new hard drives, but hesitated if I should buy a new ones from the local markets where I live, or used ones from eBay. The local market add warranty of course while eBay you just on your own luck. I can not deny that I am a bit afraid to go through this without any real experience, so I thought to ask. Last thing, what is your advise for the anger and regret I do have now for all that stuffs I've lost? I keep telling myself, that it is just how life is, and we all will be gone in the end, and imagine that you just born today and start once again, or consider this an alert to take care that life is so fragile and everything could be gone in just a matter of blink of an eye, or even consider this as a tip to just not be connected to anything and be strong.
