Here's my setup: Mid-2014 MacBook Pro running Yosemite. Recently installed Windows 8.1 on Bootcamp and then upgraded to 10. Every so often - maybe every 5-10 minutes, the entire system will freeze. It seems to relate to heavy file transfer - maybe emptying the recycle bin, copying a downloaded file to another location, etc. - but basically everything in Explorer stops. Can't maximise/minimise/resize windows. Metro apps become unresponsive. This typically lasts a few seconds and then everything kicks in again. A weird scenario just happened: I had a large number of accidentally deleted files that I was restoring. I had a Recycle Bin window open and the restore progress (a copy operation). The copy kept stalling and everything was hanging until I closed the Recycle Bin window. The restore completed quickly and everything was running fine again. Sorry for the long post, but has anyone else seen similar? By the way, none of the issues sated above were apparent under Windows 8.1
could be some incompatibilities with bootcamp since it isn't exactly the same as 8.1 (close lol), nothing like that on physical or Vm here.
OK, seems after a bit of investigation I found that the "Microsoft Windows Search Filter Host" kept peaking at 30%+ on the CPU every so often. I followed the "Most Helpful Reply" here (can't post links yet! answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/microsoft-windows-search-filter-host-is-burning-my/bae4c974-5b47-4ab2-b17d-c599853f00f1?rtAction=1412437522366) and it now seems to be fine. I'll play around some more and see if I get the same issues.
I had problems with it pausing whilst doing file transfers, it was as if it let my external drive go to sleep whilst it was transferring then took a while to wake it up. everything seemed to copy ok. has anybody had lots of this pc icons appear on their desktop? seemed to happen to me when doing various file copy operations.
Often is impossible to copy some files from a directory to another, because "the file is locked by another process". Where the "another process", is explorer itself.
@spider-vice didn't know about the icon bug, thanks for letting me know @efa11 will try to find some antivirus software that works with windows 10 since avast doesn't might take a look at avg
