I'm thinking of building a new computer in the near future and was wondering if anyone knows whether it's still possible to get a permanent Win10 activation by upgrading from an activated Windows 7 or 8 install.

I'm assuming they deactivated the normal Windows Update upgrades, but it should still be possible to do an upgrade by starting the installer directly from an USB stick.
The question is whether or not this will result in a valid activation like before, or if Microsoft blocked it on the server side.

Has anyone tried this after the official "free upgrade" expiration date?
