Has anyone gotten W7 to work on a Z690 motherboard? It has CSM so it booted right up on an existing install that has all drivers on it and it boots to the login screen but won't load any of the drivers. The board has usb 2 and that is what I have tried initially and then added a 3.1 card that has W7 drivers but none of the usb ports work. It usually will load the drivers at the login screen and work after a couple of minutes on other systems. Have they changed even the usb 2 ports on these boards so the drivers won't work?

Right now I am using an i7 4770 on an ASRock MoBo. If I replace these two to upgrade, which CPU is the "highest" for win 7. I am NOT a gamer, so what MoBo am I looking for, to get that set-up working, without too much extras?

    Thank you

"Officially" supports Win 7? The 200 series is the last Intel platform to support it officially, but the 3 series works without modding the drivers. I have a few Z370 PC's that have all drivers working. You might have to install some manually through device manager but all the 2 series drivers work on the 3 series. The 10980xe would have the most cores that works in Win 7, but the fastest overall would be the 9900K/FS for the Z370. If you don't use the Z370 you would be limited to a 7700K on a Z270 motherboard.

Forgive, I know it is my fault, but that is not the language I speak... If I sorted through this, it seems to say, that an i9, tenth generation would be the most extreme?
Anything of, or below 10th generation will work, and as long as it works with a particular motherboard, I should be fine? I want to start with the CPU: "Anything of, or below 10th generation" and then get the mobo, that will suit this CPU.
Maybe I am not understanding my problem correctly?

Yes the 10900X to 10980XE are the most extreme. Those are compatible with the X299 motherboard. Also the 7X and 9X series are compatible with the X299. They will have an X in the CPU name like 9900X, 7940X, 10900X etc. It supports the widest range of cpu's. 7700K and 7K series is compatible with the Z270 motherboard. 8K and 9K series (8700K,9700K,9900K etc.) is compatible with the Z370 motherboard.

Do you want an inexpensive build? The 9700K with the Z370 is a pretty nice build and can be bought for about $300 plus ram cost if you don't mind some used parts.

Thank you once again, you have been very helpful. The only other thing I will have to find out should be the power supply, the present one will be too weak...

ASRock still supplies all drivers for the z270 and an i5 7600k should work nicely, which is similar to what you suggested in the first place.
Is it possible to use the present SSD with the 7 install on it directly? Will the "repair" work? I have so many changes, that I would prefer not to clean install it...

Yes I use the same install on multiple PC's. If the drivers are already on there it will work after it installs them. It should be an easy install with the Z270. You shouldn't have to repair it, just install the newer drivers. You could also download driver store explorer on your 4 series and add all the Z270 drivers to the existing driver store and then migrate it to the new PC. If that is too much for you it should work enough as it is to get them installed. You might want to download them to a USB stick before you migrate it just to be sure.

Sorry... what does that last sentence mean? The Win 7 installation will be an identical clone, it will simply be cloned to my large SSD, on which right now there is still Win 11 installed, which I am writing this with.
The future Win 7 installation itself will be same as it is right now, it is just on a speparate SSD...
I have a Win11 disc (running right now) and the Win 7 installation on another SSD. After I change the hardwar, I will need new drivers for the new different Motherboard and the different CPU.
I can download the new drivers any time.

WHAT do you want me to do with them, and WHERE?
