Correct. -- Outside (past) the beta 4 or 5 builds (cannot recall which) for the early Windows 10 Server, the store has never worked correctly. In some builds, it would install, but you cannot use it. In other builds, as @GodHand pointed out, you could open the store, navigate, but nothing would install using it. While in other builds, the store would output an error whenever tried to install it. Since the final version, the results have varied with updates as well (the last I checked). I have only ever managed to get the store to fully work only 1x and it was at a moment when I was basically screwing around, not actually keeping track any longer, since I basically had given up, and was at that point where it no longer mattered to me, that I finally got "lucky". Reading around the internet (randomly), I have read other folks have also "mistakenly" get it to work, but at a cost of the rest of the system not working right and even they too could not recall how they were able to do so. Although, the last post I recall seeing where someone managed to get it to work, suggested that when Microsoft updated the store, all the apps which had been added were locked out and new apps would not install or update from that point on. One thing is very certain, Microsoft does not seem to wish for the store to fully function in Windows Server. Now, as in post #1, there is technically a business store (I link to that post, in post #1), but it is not user-friendly (at all) and Microsoft pre-approves and disproves which apps can or cannot be installed (really not worth it in my opinion). If anyone ever figures out how to overcome the regular store app restrictions in such a manner that it works and fully functions as it does in Home, Pro, Education, or Enterprise... I'd love to know about it.
Good luck, but if I am being honest, without trying to discourage you, from what I understand, the reason why you can navigate in the store, but not install apps, is because Microsoft controls this on their end (not locally). This is where Windows as a "service" really comes into play. However, I would indeed love to be proven wrong and would be happy to give credit where credit is due. -- Should you find a way how to get the store fully functioning normally, I'd include your post or thread in my signature for others to find.
It has been ages since I installed Store on Server, and I am not sure whether I was able to download apps or not, but I do have a reg file saved that is supposed to do something like that. Here it is. I think you need to sign out or restart after running it. No matter one way or another. I won't spend much time trying since Store is never something I'd install on my actual server, but since applying the base .WIM to a VHDx and booting it to the start menu takes all of 1 minute, it's worth checking out what the fuss is about.
If that is the case, then for now... I cannot use this method at all. Can you please tell me how to completely undo and remove this?
Search. There are many apps and scripts found on this very site which will automatically remove the apps and store if you so desire. I believe (without looking), there is even a sticky thread in this very forum on how to remove stuff in Windows 10. -- Seriously, like nearly 1/2 the post in this forum (Windows 10 forum) outlines folks wanting to remove stuff and how to do it.
Has anyone used the store installer here to install facebook via the windows store on windows x86 1607 build 14393.1944 and had it actually work? I get an instant crash. I have come to the conclusion that its the lack of microsoft edge or that Im on Win 10 N LTSB. I tried the installer here and could not add edge as explained here (it simply can not be done). Id like to get facebook to work somehow, any ideas on that? For the record I really dont want edge or the store. I just wanted facebook so its ironic it wont work after all the work I did to get it.
Microsoft Edge is not available through the store and having said that, it is not a requirement for Facebook. Did you install everything or did you opt to delete some of the packages provided in post #1? Which method did you use and was it the new or old way?
I did the brand new method and it worked without issues. All the apps in the windows store work except facebook and its messenger, they instantly crash. Other people report the problem with facebook and its messenger particularly those with windows 10 N.. So i was starting to wonder if that was the problem or the lack of edge. If its not edge then it might be N.. but your script and its install of the store work so well, i cant figure out why facebook wont work.
Already done. No change.. Im going to try to reinstall it to see if it changes anything. Ill update later UPDATE: Odd I reinstalled it and bam facebook works. weird how it did not work the last time. Perhaps I used the wrong media pack..
It is possible since Microsoft has a few media packs for different builds of windows. Glad it is working now
For upgrade just open/mount the iso on the running windows and start setup.exe, no need for using an external install source.
Hey I have the exact same problem and have tried everything but can't get it to work. How do I do a system restore before the script was runned? And how do you crop out the xbox identity provider installing part?
you're talking about win 10 LTSB 2016 x64 ? there's no windows store in this version... I installed it and i never saw any windows store. Where did you find the windows store in LTSB ??
