I want to try and Hackintosh my old Dell Inspiron 640m. I read some tutorials online that say you have to take out the hard drive and connect it to another Apple computer through a dock or something. Is this really necessary? Or is there another way to EASILY install Mac OS X on the Inspiron 640m?

need chameleon2.1 also dsdt.aml for it patched.. might need legacy kernel as its not core duo.
once u use 10.6.8 u might have issues.

    try virtual machine instead.

Or even better just google "tonymacx86 iBoot + Multibeast" (remove quotes), click on the first result and follow the instructions. Note that you WILL be needing an OSX 10.6.x retail disk for the guide but they're easy enough to obtain nowadays anyway that it shouldn't really be that much of a problem!

i like to learn from my actions.. not just click n go then when it breaks i have no clue. (and it will break)
at insanelymac i call it noobiebeast cause only a noobie would use it.. then be clueless what he has done.

    10.6.3 retail untouched

the really easy way to install is to use a distro like iAtkos or Unibeast/Multibeast
then from there you can figure out which things are working and what you need to install

try to search google for your laptop model + hackintosh

successful SL10.6-installation with update to 10.6.8

A suitable combination of the instruction written for installation of SL 10.6 by Matthieu, and the tutorial for updating this to 10.6.8, written by stranostano (for Dell mini 110), proved to be successful. Interested contemporaries would get my very new tutorial with complete description of the combinied procedure at GDrive (English & German Vs.) Regrettably, I'm not allowed to post the link here > look at post #7 of this thread, please.

Nvidia Optimus doesnt work and is realy a pain in osx. I hope your Notebook doesnt have it, then you can install osx really easy. To boot you need chameleon, kexts (FakeSMC,NullPCIPowerm.)
