I know this should be in the Hardware Forum but nobody is there. I ran WD Data Lifeguard test and although my smart status is OK on the quick test I get this: Test Option: QUICK TEST Model Number: WDC WD6401AALS-00L3B2 Unit Serial Number: WD-WCASY3591345 Firmware Number: 01.03B01 Capacity: 640.13 GB SMART Status: PASS Test Result: FAIL Test Error Code: 06-Quick Test on drive 1 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 97 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 1! Test Time: 17:50:59, March 17, 2010 but I ran another test and get this:Test Option: EXTENDED TEST Model Number: WDC WD6401AALS-00L3B2 Unit Serial Number: WD-WCASY3591345 Firmware Number: 01.03B01 Capacity: 640.13 GB SMART Status: PASS Test Result: PASS Test Time: 19:49:22, March 17, 2010 Should I RMA this drive or not? It seems OK. I did try another sata cable and a different sata port. My other drives test OK. This drive (Black Edition) has been the fastest HD I've had by far, but I have gotten a couple BSOD so I moved ALL my stuff off it and ran this test. I don't understand why it reports smart as Pass, and the extended test as Pass, but fails a quick test. Can someone more knowledgeable inform me?
umm something wrong with the test maybe? seems kind of weird that a longer test would pass but a short one would fail. i don't think you should worry about it, although i am not the smartest person to ask about this particular subject
download the WD Data Lifeguard Boot ISO. Burn it and then boot it up. Run the quick test and see what error codes comes up when it is done. If it is "0000" you are good, if not write it down and google "Data Lifeguard error code XXXX" and write whatever code you got where the "XXXX" are. If you want to be sure that it is ok I would run the same boot disk and select the full scan method. Just remember that the Full method takes awhile. On my 1 TB drive it took 4 hours to complete but it is a really reliable method. Good luck.
I ran the original test with data lifeguard from a seperate disk with XP on it. I don't think the DOS would be any different. I have three WD drives, and they all pass the WD quick test except the one listed; however it is the Black edition that has 2 data processors. I don't know if that has any effect on the test. I would think that their own tool would allow for this. IDK, I think I'll RMA it just to be on the safe side. They do have an RMA option where they ship out a new drive before you send yours back. I crammed all my data (had to delete some ) on the other drives but I need OS access from win7 for some of it. I can reinstall 7 and if it doesn't quit on me I can use drive copy.

LOL, sorry dude. New egg has them again. I RMA'd it and WD sent me a refurbished 7501aals. I was kinda peaved. I bought the 640 because it has 2 high density platters. The 750 they sent for a replacement has 3 platters and doesn't spec quit as good. What if I had the drives in raid? I know the 640AALS isn't a raid drive, but firmware can change that. I just think it was wrong of them to send a refurbished 750 in place of the 640 (31 days old, no less). Talk about noise. Grinds all the time. I was scared it would fail before I got my OS loaded. Loved the 640 though, thinking of grabbing another 1, 2, or 3. LOL Missed my good chance on them though (12hour sale- $59 free shipping). I didn't know till I got home and sale was over
