Using apples new image format on my machine. Dont feel like converting to .jpg and losing quality. Is their any software out there that will let me view/edit/print with the .heic file extension?

The new high-efficiency format option on ios can save your photos to a.heic extension to save space. When you send a text message and or an email it sends as a regular jpeg file. Am I correct to assume that this is a trans-code and thus will be quality loss? Or is it more like a .zip file and its just a different re-wrap.
