I have a Dell XPS m1530 and recently it has stopped being able to charge.
It works well when plugged in.
I have read online of others with this model laptop downgrading from r12 to r09 and it started charging again.

From Windows the .exe file tells me that I need at least 10% battery in order to flash.
I tried using a live FreeDOS USB drive. The DOS interface also wouldn't let me flash with less than 10% battery.

I'm kind of at a loss here.
I need to downgrade my BIOS to charge my battery but I can't flash the BIOS with an empty battery.

I thought about trying to use flashrom utility from Linux but it needs the .rom file, not a .exe file.

I don't know what to do from here.
I don't have the skills to hack the .exe to skip the battery check.

    Any help is appreciated

    thanks

This did not work from within Windows 8 but it did work from a bootable FreeDOS USB drive.
I used this guide to create the bootable USB drive...
    wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Flashing_BIOS_from_Linux#Images_that_are_too_large_for_a_floppy

My computer now says plugged in, charging.
Before it said plugged in, not charging.
So this is progress, it is still at 0% but its only been up for a minute. I just wanted to make sure to get on here and thank you.

try a different charger.. the dell cable tips have 3 conductors not 2 .
2 positive .. pin and inside metal wall.
then the ground is the outside metal wall .
if the cable for the pin is broken it wont charge. but will power on due to other positive on inside metal wall.. notice the tip has a plastic rim on edge ?
    to separate - from +

to prevent this.. dont fold the cable by wrapping it on charger as 90% of people do.. this causes the pressure to break the smallest white wire.. the pin wire.
instead fold like a shoelace and use the rubber strap around brick

Update: laptop is now charging. Downgrading BIOS did the trick.
It is a very old laptop (like I said, m1530 core2 duo).
I will maybe last 20-30 minutes when not connected... I'm not going to buy another battery or another power adapter for it.
I just needed it to hold some kind of charge so I can move from room to room (outlet to outlet).
