I had vista in E: and XP in C: .. and ubuntu also installed in another partition

i wanted to install Win 7 ... so formatted C: and installed win 7.. it worked fine , i even activated it

You could try EasyBCD 2.0 to rebuild the boot loader.
It supports Ubuntu 9.04, Vista and Win7.

Also check in disk management. The Vista partition may not be mounted and lacking a driveletter.
