Well Windows 8 migwiz.exe works for backing up files but it does not restore settings at all.

This looks like big problem for me. Now we can't move our settings from 8.1 to 8.1. And from any other windows too. I've tried win7 and win 8, and only files are transferred, not settings. The only one way to keep your programs and settings is to install win 8.0 over 7, and then install win 8.1 over 8.0. Stupid, crazy, but it is fact.

I just can't understand why they removed those upgrade features. Just to loose another one buyer?

I don't think they counted on people trying to upgrade through MSDN isos.
Remember, it's going to be a free download soon, and people won't need to transfer squat.

Starting in Win9, though, it will be an issue. We'll have to figure out another way.

Yes. This is true. They counted on money, not people :) But those things are looking like epic fail for the MS marketing. I hope I am wrong about it and we will have official way to upgrade our versions to 8.1 and BACKUP current 8.1 settings

We can still use Windows Easy Transfer tool from WIN7 on WIN8.1 PC, just copy Windows 7 System32\migwiz folder and run migwiz.exe.
