    Time to repot back.

First of all the bad news, I still haven't been able to install XP.

Here's what happened. The computer I want to install XP on is currently using Linux Mint 11, so when I put in the cd and try to boot from it I get a "missing ntldr" error. I have tried some methods including going into ntldrismissing.com and no luck. I made a USB bootable disc of the XP ISO and it won't even recognize it. It does however boot any Linux distro off the USB, just not the XP installer. The CD-ROM gives me either a)ntldr missing error, or b) boot straight into Linux Mint.

I also tried to copy the ntldr file and ntdetect.com file into C, I did it booting into a live USB install of Puppy Linux, however, this did not solve the errors I got whenever I tries to boot from the USB or half the time I tried to boot of the CD (the other half it just boots straight into the Linux Mint OS).

So... Here I am again, lost. I am thinking I might need to format the drive completely, but I am afraid if I do that I will stil get the same error message. I read tons of online posts that have had this problem, some solve it, and other simply seem to fade away. So yeah, completely lost here.

Sounds to me like the iso was not burned correctly, or was corrupted during download. Will the CD boot on a different machine ?

CD and USB iso boot fine on any other Windows computer.

    edit:
I also read that this might have something to do with the BIOS not being properly set or whatever, but the thing is on that computer (the one that won't boot) I have been able to boot from USB devices before, even install Windows before, plus it does boot other Linux distros and it also booted the tool to check the CRC code from Dell.

    edit 2:
Forgot to mention that the computer also won't boot any other Windows CD I have, student release of 7 Pro for example, same ntldr missing error each time.

Check your bios settings, boot sequence etc. Maybe go inside the case and unplug all drives except the cd/dvd, then see if the cd will boot. (Windows setup should start and report that it can't find a hard drive)

I was just finishing doing that, still nothing. CD rom does work though, USB ports work too.

    edit2:
I think I'm going to have to reformat the entire drive unless I find another method, hopefully it will load the installer then. Will report on that once I do.

    Update time!

I feel like such a noob right now, which I am. I changed my BIOS settings, and I could boot off any Windows CD now, except the one I wanted to boot from. I realized then that this wasn't a BIOS issue anymore (after fixing it), this had something to do with my ISO. I checked the SHA-1 and to my surprise but not suspicion, the sums are way off. Let this be a lesson to you kids out there, always check the sums and make sure they are the same.

So I am now in the processes of downloading the ISO again since I deleted the rars. Again, sorry for the lack of knowledge but at least now I will always check!

Final report. It worked great. It did ask for the key during install and I entered the one provided. Works great and active and genuine of course. Thanks a lot guys.

    tcntad's OEM:SLP cd's do not have OEM:SLP keys included.

I'm trying to find the one's for HP and MEDION... without any luck.

I'm not sure if there is MS generic slp 1.0 key for Home Edition, although any vendor key would work of course.

@l2p2c2 Google "xp slp key", can't post them here.
