I did not use the address bar in Windows 7, but now in Windows 8 I'm finding it useful again simply as another option to get to a drive letter (for example typing D: hitting enter)

I seem to remember being able to remove the text "address" from the left side of the bar in XP, is this possible in Windows 8?

no I want the bar without the word next to it. I think you could do it in XP but I can't find the option in Win 8.1

I'm assuming it can be done in the registry?

Unlock taskbar, right click Address text, and select Show tittle
    and relock taskbar.
