Wanted to do some testing between antivirus programs so far I like eset the most because it's light and my current computer is $h!t
MSE is a resource hog, even if it does protect better than OneCare, AVG, and Avast. I'll still stick with Avira
MSE has a tiny initial download but contrary to all reviews/reports about low resource usage, I've found it to be quite the contrary. It's as bad as AVG Free (which is a resource hog too and has a ridiculous amount of processes loaded). It's also very basic indeed. I use Kaspersky Internet Security but of the free bunch, Avast is my favourite. This is a "how long is a piece of string" question, there's no right answer/one answer fits all solution. ESET Smart Security disables loads of it's security in Automatic mode. Great way to reduce the prompts! And Interactive mode results in loads of prompts. Kaspersky Internet Security (and Norton IS which I otherwise hate) has a white list/black list which means in Automatic mode nothing switched off, as it has the intelligence to know what is safe/dangerous.
I recommend Kaspersky, ESET, Avira, or avast! for your Windows host machines and most security software is suitable for a Windows guest in a private network. I prefer MSE for my Windows guest machines because I only allow internet connections to these machines for Windows Updates. MSE software receives its updates from the same servers that deliver Windows OS updates. This allows me to immediately recognize any attempts by the guest to communicate with different nodes other than Microsofts servers, my ISPs servers, or my local network.
thats a no cause I use Norton at the moment... Which doesn't seem to be slowing down my laptop that much but Vmware well thats crazy...
I was running MSE in my home computer and I take it down and install KIS with bonus key (1 year key free). MSE is simple and do the job, but my problem is with the memory usage. While KIS has 2 processes running in 19mb and 2mb, MSE has 2 processes running in 48mb and 6mb. So I prefer the low usage... My computer is: Athlon X2 5000+ 4G DDR800 dual-channel ATI Radeon HD 4650 GDDR2 512mb HDD 500G SATA
