Windows operates after the principle that unused RAM is useless RAM. Since it doesn't do anything while not being used, Windows will work its ass off to load as much as possible into the RAM, in order to speed up the computer. If another program requires used-up memory, that memory will be paged to the page file ;)

My computer have been running for one day and four hours now, and the RAM usage is at 57%, with a lot of applications loaded and running (2 GB DDR2) everything runs quite smoothly. It was a completely different story with Vista back in those days...

It's just holding more files in memory for more apps you use most often now so they launch quicker.. Probably.. I think it's the superfetch service. I forget which one to be honest, but I believe it's from that. Wouldn't see any other reason for it to spike like that... Unless you got adwarez and crap.

Most likely the memory that is being used now (putting it at 500,600+ ) is flagged as "Available" memory. It's being used, but not accessed (storing files for your unopened apps you use) so it can just overwrite it. If you understand what I'm saying, then you probably get the gist of it. If not, maybe someone else can help. Don't know how else to explain it. This is my guess anyways. I been up since yesterday. Wooo! GL

A little off topic, but yeah I think so. Can't really say anything for sure though, until SP1 is actually released ;)

I use around 900MB out of 2GB when nothing is running (except Norton Internet Security 2010). But usually totally should be under 1.5GB

At system startup on win 7 ult. X64, I see a usable memory of around 3.5GB (total RAM of 5GB).

    I have 3GB, running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

I see ram usage between 1.1GB to 1.6GB with normal usage - i.e. Firefox, Windows explorer, and may be command prompt, control panel open.

    Hi,

I have been using windows 7 since it was released in the beta version and now having the ultimate version. I have found that win 7 uses almost around 50 percent of the RAM even if the RAM is 2GB,3GB or 4GB. What it does is it loads 50% of the RAM with the current running process and then rest is saved in the swap/page memory. For getting the best out of the Win 7 you should have at-least 1GB RAM.
