I'm about to set up a computer with Win7 x64 for my dad. I'd like to have maintenance run on this machine with as little user interaction as possible, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to make Windows handle the updates the way I want. Perhaps you can give me a hint.

    Windows should

    - always download critical and recommended updates
    - never ask the user to install these updates
    - always install any updates there might be on system shutdown, never at any other time

Oh wise ones, please help me out with this.

Go to windows update and click on change update settings, then click on the box and select download updates but let me choose when to install them.
After that check the box that says "give me recrommended updates the same way i recive important updates. This should make it how you wanted

It is pretty close, but there's still the traytip "updates are ready to be installed" that would need to go.
