How to encrypt external hard drive?

    What's the best way to encrypt external harddrive that can't be unlocked by anyone except me or those whom I allow?

    theirs tons of third party software for encrypting drives...but why pay when windows offers bitlocker for free.

    the most secure yes or you have to buy one of those externals that come wiht built in security
