    Hello there,

I have tried in many forums and googled for the solution but no luck to find one. Any help would be appreciated or please tell me is it possible / impossible to retrieve the MAK key.

    Cheers

A very simple answer is: It is NOT possible!

The key is not stored on local machine in full, so you can NOT retrive it

In fact they can not be retrieved at all, as they are simply NOT stored anywhere

He is correct, I have been searching for a way to find these keys since Server 2008 came out. I read an article once that explained that like sebus said the key isn't even stored in the registry but some encrypted hash of it is stored in the product activation files. So if you need to save the key you are SOL, the only option you have it reinstall on the same hardware using the old activation files.

Well then if we can't extract the key. Is there any chance to find where it is stored in the registry? If we found the relevant encrypted registry key is it possible to extract the key from it? I would appreciate the developers / coders reply.

make sure to write down the mak key so you don't have to retrieve it from within the OS ;)
