look into ubcd4win ... they have methods to make it work for usb like win PE
will have a closer look ,thanks.
Didn't test this but:
If you can disassemble the external casing and get the hdd out, connect it directly to the mainboard, install xp and re-assemble the external usb drive, use easybcd to add it to the bootoptions.
