I've only had 1 bricked MB flashing from Windows.......That was the last time I flashed from Windows. The error wasn't due to flashing from windows exactly but rather a bug in the BIOS file itself. Regardless of the cause, the result was a dead MB.

I have a question about phoenix tools... What is 'Key' for ? Do I have to include it when I want to add only SLIC 2.1 to an ASUS BIOS?
There is a standard way for many OEMs to add permanent SLIC data in AMI provided Aptio firmware using MMTool (by inserting them as EFI modules and resign the capsule with their private key). Fortunately for us, few of those keys got leaked. Phoenix Tool's New Module method can mimic the above described procedure on modern Asus firmware.
Thank you Tito for the detailed explanation. I have some knowledge of the PC BIOS and Firmware in general, but the EFI/UEFI BIOS is somewhat new to me and looks more complex than 'classic' BIOS. There is still a lot to learn, but I want to know how things work.
I have an ASUS M5A97 Mobo. Back with SLIC 2.3 came out I successfully added it into my bios. I do not quite remember how I did it. All I know is PhoenixTools now reports I have an AMI 2.0 slic and the Dell 2.3. I have the Dell 2.4 slic now, but for some reason I am unable to replace the SLIC 2.3 with the 2.4. Would anyone know how to do this? If this is the wrong thread or the data is elsewhere, then please point me to it. I have searched here and on google and still cannot find anything on this.

Well, well, well. That worked perfectly! Thanks so much. The instructions said to clear the non-critical block #2, but all but #1 was grey. I cleared #1 and now I am on SLIC 2.4!
Is there more reliable method to work out which block to erase to clean up SLIC? I ask as I've tried to erase block #2 on an ASUS X299-A and it did not work (blocks 1-9 are available so quite a lot of choices). Not sure what it did erase but had to recover the BIOS. Erasing block #1 does not work at all (cannot erase). Block #3 did erase it but it did not 'write' thew new SLIC just none at all now. Also I note that latest BIOS 1102 does not seem to include SLP2? anymore - so cannot mod it to add SLIC anymore. I've successfully modified all older BIOSes 1004-earlier with PhoenixTool 2.66 (permanent method, not that I needed being permanent but to check it works - and this is the 1st BIOS the tool complains SLP is missing. Anyway anyone doing this - make a SPI BIOS copy if possible before erasing any blocks, perhaps best to take a full copy before installing any permanent SLIC as it does not seem that easy to erase as it is to add. Until we know what all blocks store you may erase something important ;(
I want to revert to stock oem bios on ASUS M5A97 R2.0 motherboard, and eliminate SLIC 2.1 mod. Any help much appreciated. Andrew

@cneri There are multiple keys distributed among OEMs - these two were leaked and proven as working. You can use any of them.
I had intended to use Win7 on a new ASUS Prime Z370-P mobo. So, I did a BIOS mod. Then, I found that the mobo utilities and software are not compatible with Win7. I was being forced to move up to Win10. I am using Win10 LTSB with a KMSpico activation. I do not need the BIOS mod, plus it seems to be causing problems with getting the PC to boot. Updating the BIOS does not seem to affect the mod. Activation for Win7 is not removed. Can the BIOS be reset back to its pre-mod state? Will removing the battery and/or changing the shunt on the CLRTC jumper do what I want?
