This thread can serve as a 'Things you better dont do' archive.

    My first contribution: (discovered yesterday)

Normally, if you want to get rid of the arrows on your shortcuts, you would delete HKCR/lnkfile/IsShortcut.

On 7 this is a BAD idea because after that you wont be able to pin anything to the taskbar anymore. (Except for the windows games, (Chess, etc), but thats probably because they arent per-user.)

    Symptoms:

    • Missing 'pin to taskbar/startmenu' context-menu entry on links under Start/Programs

    • Dragged or otherwise pinned shortcuts appear in the 'UserPinned/TaskBar' folder but never get displayed on the taskbar

    • Possibly more i didnt notice

    Fix:

    Restore HKCR/lnkfile/IsShortcut and reboot.

Don't modify image resources in authui.dll

As other files like explorer.exe and shellstyle.dll can be modified in terms of it's image resources, authui.dll cannot.
It holds much of the resources of the logon screen u see before loggin into windows.
As soon as you alter an image inside this file, and it differs as much as a pixel, you won't be able to login into windows anymore. After submitting your pass, a black screen is all you will get.

    Fix:

When having a dual-or multibooted environment, you can boot into another os, and from there put the original file back in place, if you have made a proper backup.

Otherwise, system restore or reinstall. Safe mode won't work either...

LOL, yes I know this issue firsthand, thanks again for the fix paymyrent.

I'm not completely sure about this, but I killed services.exe in the task manager yesterday and got a very wierd "windows encountered a critical error and needs to restart, you will be logged off in one minute" dialogue box yesterday. never seen that before in my life in any windows version.

    this one is a beauty:

copying the Windows 7 partition to another drive partition with partition duplicating software, then formatting or deleting the original partition for whatever reason and then trying to boot from the copied partition..........

there are not enough swear words in the English language to describe the frustration!!

That sucks. What did you do to brick it? Does your MoBo have some form of self-recovery? I have an Asus board and it actually has a built in bios restore feature but I had to review the manual to find out that it was there and how to use it.

Well, at least you can take it out. I have a video card that is in my tower that makes it almost impossible to remove the MoBo because of how it sits lol.
