Sorry if this has been asked before, but how will Windows 10's "free upgrade" work for those who decide to upgrade from their currently SLIC-activated Windows 7 (and other venues such as KMS/MSDN etc)? Will MS issue brand new Windows 10 keys for these people?
The upgrade will be tied to the machine you upgrade on and the key will be the underlying key currently in use on that machine.
The generic key? I have a bad feeling they would change their mind later and will require re-entering the COA key...
Huh ... another thread for wild speculations, good there are no such threads already . BTW: No free upgrade for Volume (KMS) Versions.
if it has a COA key (pre windows 8) then that would be the key. In any event you can't move it to another machine or at least that is what they say. If you have a valid licensed os before the upgrade you will have a fully activated os after the upgrade and it will be good for "the life of the PC"..that pc. If your os is not valid it will still upgrade but not be activated and you will have the choice of buying a license, rolling back to where you started from or watch it stop working at some point in the future (not stated when that will be).
since when does unactivated windows stop working? all it does is show "Activate Windows" on top of everything
dude tell me about it.....this is the most talk about topic in the MDL theirs at least 1500 threads on this
Since they said it would in their release yesterday I guess. "I want to opt out of the Windows Insider Program on 7/29. If you decide to opt-out of the program and upgrade to the 7/29 build you will be subject to exactly the same terms and conditions that govern the offer* that was extended to all Genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 customers. This is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems. If your system upgraded from a Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license it will remain activated, but if not, you will be required to roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license. If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire."
Hey, I tried to change the topic of the last thread on to the 'Dancing Girls' Lobo mentioned. But nobody picked up on it.
I have a few PC's running Win7 activated with Daz. Now am getting "Get Windows 10" icon in all. Should I reserve the download? If I don't, can I reserve it after it is released. If I reserve, can I opt out of it later and not install it? What is the best option?
Nobody knows for sure as of yet, but there's rumor that M$ 10's install will look into the bios for the SLIC key and certificate, and it won't be there if you used the DAZ loader. Windows 10 will probably install but it may not activate if that is the case. You can do a bios mod and install a SLIC key and cert in the bios. You can opt out of the reserve anytime before 7/29, best to wait to see what happens. M$ is giving people one year to install 10 for free so you'll have plenty of time
Win 7 SLIC table does not contain any key or cert. They need to be installed after Win Setup. Not confuse it with Win8/8.1 MSDM table.
Thanks for that info, but I was under the impression that Windows 7 does use SLIC 2.1 right? and if no key or cert, then what does it have?
Ok thanks. I have "reserved" the upgrade on my laptop but will probably not download immediately. How can I now opt out if I want to do so?
Key and cert aren't part of the SLIC table itself, they need to be installed to the system directly. This is what Windows Loader does when a SLIC 2.1 is detected.
