Since the 840-G2 doesn't have a DVD drive I'm trying to force a USB DVD drive to boot a backup/restore dvd external drive to be the first device in the boot sequence. The 840-G2 doesn't recognise this device. If I use F9 to select boot devices it only shows the hard drive and the ethernet drive. I have tried to force the USB DVD device to be the first one, but the HP Elite 840-G2 won't start with it. Any help on how to get a USB DVD drive to be first in the startup sequence.

You don’t need to make the USB DVD drive bootable.
First make a bootable USB flash drive. Make sure you format it to fat32.
Then copy all the files from the CD or DVD to the flash drive and boot from it.

You could have told it to boot from Legacy device.
