This is really odd. Today, in windows update, it had KB2919355 again.
Nothing in the system was cleaned / scrubbed or anything else.
Now, why would they redo KB2919355 again?

    Nope. That's a driver issue.
It fixes the server 2003/2008 ssl wsus issue

As close as I can find out - that is a graphic card driver issue.
Mostly affects NVIDIA cards, not sure about others.

Would uninstalling the NVidia driver before updating help? Or is it gonna happen even with MS default drivers ?

Or how about upgrading using the updated ISO ?

It wouldn't happen with the drivers that come with win8.x, but if you install any downloaded versions (even from windows update) it can do the black screen of death.
Yes, it's advisable to remove the drivers before upgrading.

I think I read somewhere that your idea might work, but not 100% sure.
It may be a trial and error situation depending on the model card blah blah blah.
I have had the issue several times, still not sure what corrects it - other than format...:D

He has a 780ti so he's not gonna want to run the MS drivers

So who are we waiting on to fix this then? Microsoft or NVidia ?

I think even though he knows 8.1 has reached EOS and he needs Update 1 to continue getting updates, it's a case of once bitten...

I'm sure nvidia is working on it. If they haven't already released new drivers, they will soon.

I feel dumb for installing KB2959977. It just messed up most of my apps and games with a black screen when I start them. Good thing I got an Acronis backup. If I don't install this update will MS not allow any more updates?
