Even if I press on "check for updates".

When I install Windows 10 before, I got updates.

Though I'm using 8.1 Pro, it appears I also do not get updates for Store apps - many times I've seen downloads, many times one or more of the log files says "all downloads ready to install", and many times I've clicked on the Store "Update Apps" button only to be told there are no updates.

However, today I looked into things a little more closely and see that at least one of the apps - Reader - was updated on the 10th.

That is to say, the left hand of Microsoft's software is saying "getting updates, got them, ready to install" and the right hand is saying, essentially, "Already installed updates, yer good to go".

Have no clue how I got to this state, nor even if I care about it.

Anyway, go to the Store and find via the Store's search one of the apps you want to update and see what it says about "already owned" and "when last updated" on the page that shows up.
