The last time I installed Windows 7 I had left a Windows.old folder. I'm considering reinstalling Windows again, but I'm wondering whether using the option that keeps that folder would have the same effect performance wise as a clean install. Is there anything that's beneficial if I formatted the hard drive for that clean installation?

A format and clean install is always better plus takes up less space.

You have a clean install assuming you did not do an upgrade install. If you need space just delete windows.old.
