I done a backup of everything. Checked it 3 times. Turned off the computer. Carefully unpluged the drive. put the new OS on, updates all installed. turned off the computer. hooked up the drive, went to my computer and was so happy it was still there. opened it up and its totally empty. run a recovery on it and nothing. Just dont understand.
Some more info would be handy what program did you use to do backup and what type of backup was it files, system partition, drive ?
I am starting out clean and installing one thing at a time to try to figure out what seems to be the cause of my problems. So far I have done a clean install of XP Home. Loaded all my drivers and started updates, A few at a time till I maybe can see where it all seems to start. So far so good. Everything is working. Maybe I caan figure out why my system does great and then all the sudden everything starts giving me trouble. I think it has to be something I am installing. The last 2 times I have reinstalled everything was perfect then just seems to all start running sluggish and getting errors and app's start hanging.
You not really explaing anything at all, and certainly not well enough to understand what problem you seem to have Try again (otherwise nobody can help you) sebus

The only things I have not done is installed a few things that I have used for a long time that I know have never caused me problems. I have not downloaded net frame work yet. Now. When I put 7 ultimate on here a few weeks ago I used a loader and when I went back to XP I never removed the loader before I wiped the drive. Does it stay or does reinstalling XP take care of that. So if there is any reason net frame work would be messing with things please let me know or if it could have anything to do with not uninstalling the win 7 loader. Thanks ahead of time for any thing at all.
Sorry, The problem has been a slow shut down within a few days of pretty much everything. I start out with a new install of XP and by the time I get everything loaded and all up dates on here it gets to the point that nothing will load. Optical drives take like 5 minutes to finally read a disk if they even will. It's like the whole system just slows to a crawl. It's not really just one thing. Just random. I have never had these problems before and I have had this computer for almost 2 years. Has been very dependable.
And how does that relate to fist post about some sort of backup? Also: Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB get some spare cash & double it sebus
Well thats just it. I am not sure if it relates or not. I done the backup so I could do a fresh install and then the disk I backed up was blank after. I am not sure if it all relates to one thing or not. At this point I would just like to know that I can install IE8 and net frame work and not have it slow my system to a crawl. Some things I do require net frame work and always before it would slow some things down but never grind my computer to a halt. After I installed 7 and removed it is when all this started. I did have optical drive problems prior to that but replaced the drive and all was well.
Is there an alternitive. I run some programs on here that require net framework to function. And have noticed that after installing various problems start. Not sure if its all that but as of now everything is working great and it and IE8 are the only 2 things I have not updated to. I have a few other programs not installed yet like adobe photoshop but been useing that for years with no problem. Just trying to narrow things done to most probable so if it does it again I have an idea where to even look.
