A friend has asked me to update her HP laptop running win7 Home to win10.

I just spent 10 hours trying to get GWX to show the icon in taskbar but it always fails (cannot load hresult).

So my question is can I just go ahead and update using X20-08980.img and not use an MS Account? Will it activate if I do this?

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm afraid that GWX is mandatory: your must 'reserve' your W10 copy.

I think it's wiser to wait until a definitive answer appears.

I'd say neither GWX nor MSA is required. GWX is only for reserving the upgrade, something I think is not really necessary. Coming July 29, there will be ways to get the upgrade either way, if not officially than through this forum. Plus: Reserving the upgrade is no guarantee to receive it on release day. Since it's going to be a staged roll-out, and Insiders will be first, it might take some time until it gets actually downloaded.

Regarding MSA, it is confirmed (via Gabe) that an account is not required for upgrading; it's only mandatory for Insiders.

To be on the safe side (activation-wise), I'd wait until July 29 and use the build that gets released that day for upgrading.

im 99.9% sure GWX is required to get the free upgrade

But I think it's also possible that x20 img is the exact same one as GA on the 29th build and some zero day patches will be added in by then
So I'm thinking maybe u upgrade with that?

    Well...

    MSA is certainly not required.

And if GWX is also not required...

    GWX was only marketing!

GWX is only to assure the readiness of a users machine and initiate the download/upgrade when available.

But neither this nor MSA are mandatory for the upgrade.

Same here. Also upgraded several Windows 7 laptops both with OEM licences and Daz loader fake OEM licences and all have activated.

I want to confirm what is being stated.

Box 1 has an amd 770 chipset board with an Asus slic 2.1 bios mod. Did a clean install of windows 7 pro sp1 and did an in place upgrade with out installing any updates before hand.

Box 2 was a p35 chipset board with a similar bios mod and had a copy of Windows 7 that was fully updated before the in place upgrade but didn't have gwx in the taskbar.

Both upgrades were successful and without issue.

    On Windows 8.1 GWX icon,
    KB3035583
    KB2976978
are required for permanently activated Windows 10.

Without those things, Windows 10 setup will ask for product key, and will fail to activate after upgrade completed.
On Windows 8.0 KMSPico-ed, the setup did not ask for product key.
Windows 10 Pro activated successfully with permanent activation. Determined using slmgr /xpr

Guys just for the record: i've just upgraded from a legit win 8.1 to win 10 and activated it correctly.
Now did a clean install and windows 10 is now automatically activated.

Formatted my PC that originally came with windows 7, and installed windows 7 from scratch.
Without using windows update no nothing, not even installing drivers, plugged in the windows 10 usb install (made from RTM iso)... When the install finished, BOOM, Windows activated.
Since I wanted a clean install, formatted the PC once again and started to install Windows 10 from scratch... Boom, windows activated.

So to me, all the MSA, GWX crap is bullsh*tzorz.

Repeated the process in another pc and two laptops... all ended activated.

    Have a good day everyone!
