I'm using Linux Mint KDE 17.3 x64 and default it comes with kernel 3.19. I've tried to upgrade to 4.3.3, but it doesn't get along at all with my ATi video card, messed up my installation, thus I had to reinstall. Kernel 4.4 LTS, released 2 days ago, should have better support for my ATi, so I wanted to install it using the following commands: Spoiler $ cd /tmp $ wget \ kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4-wily/linux-headers-4.4.0-040400_4.4.0-040400.201601101930_all.deb \ kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4-wily/linux-headers-4.4.0-040400-generic_4.4.0-040400.201601101930_amd64.deb \ kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4-wily/linux-image-4.4.0-040400-generic_4.4.0-040400.201601101930_amd64.deb Install the Kernel: $ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-4.4*.deb linux-image-4.4*.deb Unfortunately, the installation part went...weird. Anyone had any luck upgrading to 4.4 without problems?
I have Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 x64, but I'm not clear if it's KDE or xfce. My video card is nvidia in a Dell M4700 laptop. If I tried it, would the results (positive or negative) be of value to you? It's all backed up with Acronis, so no problem if it blows up. Even if it did blow up, I can do a clean install in way less time than any Win OS.
Did it. I guess it worked. When I run 'uname -r' in the terminal, it returns with: "4.4.0-040400-generic" Hope this helps.
Mine is at version 3.16.0-38-generic. If I upgrade it will it break the system (not backed up)? Cinnamon x64 17.3 version.
Right now the score is tied at 1. The OP's broke, mine didn't. We need a tie breaker It's your decision to take the risk. I never did ask what is so great about the latest kernel, and I don't notice anything obvious. BTW - I had a little trouble with the script file. Could well be my fault, but I couldn't get the single 'wget' command to grab all three packages at once. I did 'wget' three times, once for each package.
It seems that kernel 4.4 doesn't play well with my ATi video card. I decided to not bother. I'm pretty sure Linux Mint 18 Sarah will have it. 4 months of waiting...
Wonderful. Didn't we just spend 4 months waiting out the jump from 17.2 to 17.3? (I know, it's not exactly the same thing. But it makes us look like like the M$ Windows crowd: It just doesn't matter what is available today, got to have the 'next' build/release, knowing full well they "can't get no - satisfaction" from that either).
Type in terminal opened in that folder: Code: sudo dpkg -i *.deb then Code: sudo update grub then reboot
Well...I'm not into "I must have the latest and the greatest". I was interested in 4.4 because of its improvements. 3.19 does its work pretty well. I'm not a gamer anymore, but just for the sake of it I wanted to see if 4.4 is better than 3.19. I also heard that clem (linux mint main developer) will add Plasma 5 (Windows 8 "flat look") to Linux Mint 18 Sarah. If that's going to be the case, then I'll stay on 17.3...forever. Or somebody will keep updating KDE 4.x by forking it, as they did with KDE 3.x which has been forked to TDE (Trinity Desktop Environment). At first glance, I was pissed at KDE 4.x the way it worked, but lucky me, I wasn't coming from KDE 3.x, so it wasn't a huge learning curve.
Kernel 4.4.1 successfully installed on Mint without problem, all run fine : Download : Code: $ wget kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4.1-wily/linux-headers-4.4.1-040401_4.4.1-040401.201601311534_all.deb $ wget kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4.1-wily/linux-headers-4.4.1-040401-generic_4.4.1-040401.201601311534_amd64.deb $ wget kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4.1-wily/linux-image-4.4.1-040401-generic_4.4.1-040401.201601311534_amd64.deb Install Code: $ sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-4.4.1*.deb linux-image-4.4.1*.deb Reboot Code: sudo reboot Uninstall in case of problems Code: sudo apt-get remove 'linux-headers-4.4.1*' 'linux-image-4.4.1*' windsman.
Just to throw it in, I've been reading Linux Mint 18 Sarah will have systemd and that quite a few folk ain't too happy about it. One poster going as far as labeling it flat out malware! and many saying Linux Mint 17 will be the last version they'll be using. I'm a noob to Linux, so what do I know? But there appears to be quite a few folk who seem to know their stuff saying really bad things about systemd ...
@ausernamenoonehas: 17.3 Rosa is based on 14.04 LTS, which is supported until 2019. I'm fine with that. Windows 7 SP1 extended support will last until 2020, also. After that, I'll switch to another linux distro that will comply to my own standard, unless Linux Mint developers will keep this distro systemd-free and geoclue-free.
