laptop originally has 3GB (2GB+1GB) ddr2 in two slots. took out the
1GB and gave it away. after giving it away, noticed that the laptop
crashes somewhat randomly without crash dumping although it is
configured to do so. it just reboots.

the remaining 2GB passed memory tests and the hard drive has no
problem. it crashes whether the OS is windows xp, windows 7, or
    linux.

don't have the 1GB with me anymore.

so can laptop crash because its memory slots is not fully populated?
    if so, why?

    tia.
