Hi, So, A new journey begins. I am all set to play with VMWare, etc. virtualisations but unable to make out & decide what exactly is required to go with the combo in terms of specs / hardware. I am aware of the say the more you put the better it comes out to be but the requirement is different as always i.e. to manage everything within certain budgetary limits. Right now I am in the middle of these three laptop configurations : 1. Intel® Core™ Ultra 5 125H ; 16 GB DDR5-5600 MHz RAM (2 x 8 GB) ; 512 GB PCIe® Gen4 NVMe™ M.2 SSD 2. AMD Ryzen™ 5 8540U ; 16 GB LPDDR5-6400 MHz RAM (onboard) ; 512 GB PCIe® Gen4 NVMe™ M.2 SSD 3. Intel Core i7-1255U ; 32 GB DDR4-3200MHz RAM (2 x 16 GB) ; 1 TB PCIe Gen3 NVMe. M.2 SSD I also have some doubts : (a) Intel Core Ultra 5 125H generates more heat ? A consumer laptop's cooling blades/arrangements will deal well with it ? (b) AMD as a processor/chipset reliable ? Good with Linux as well ? (c) Intel Core i7-1255U : Too slow / less capable processor ? Please let me know which one is the best. Also clear my doubts. And your suggestions. Anything else ? Thanks.
To use virtualization software like VMware Workstation, the most important specification is the RAM. At least 16 GB if you want to run one virtual OS with your main OS. More if you want to run multiple virtual machines concurrently. I suggest 32 GB RAM or more if you can afford it. My main PC has 80 GB RAM and even though it is from almost 10 years ago, it allows me to run multiple (2 or more) virtual machines (each with 8 GB RAM) without breaking a sweat. So in view of the above option 3 will be most suitable. However, are you happy with a 12th generation CPU that is a few generations back? Can the other machines (say option 1) be equipped with more RAM? Core Ultra 5 125H will possibly generate more heat (4P + 8E (12) cores vs 2P + 8E (10) cores of i7-1225H) but I am not sure. AMD is pretty reliable nowadays since the first generation Ryzen in 2017.
By the way what people here think about Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Pro Laptops ? @NewEraCracker : Thanks. We had a few exchanges through MDL main Chat box but the processors you are talking about had TDP as high as 91W while the Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Pros have processors like Intel Core Ultra 5 125H & Intel Core Ultra 7 155H. These processors have TDP as 28W. So, the question is whether these Samsung laptops will be good enough to do away with these processors' heat ? @WindowsGeek : Would you like to offer some help in the matter ? @Enthousiast : A Word ? Anyone else ? Thanks.
I think you better go with Samsung Galaxy3 Book pro. It comes with i5 1340P & i7 1360P processors which are optimized for modern thin & light laptops yet powerful. Intel H series is high performing but has been notorious for overheating in laptops. Galaxy3 Book Pro is more tested & also incorporates more tested processors. Anyway, Samsung incorporates vapor chamber for thermal management which I did not find in competitive hp laptops specs. ( Some hp Probook laptops may also be suitable for you Or High Dell Latitude series )
