Microsoft’s long-awaited free replacement for their awful OneCare anti-virus software will apparently ship sometime on September 29th. From a spokesperson: “I can confirm that Microsoft Security Essentials, the company’s highly anticipated no cost consumer security offering, will be released to the public tomorrow, September 29th.” It will be available in 19 markets worldwide, according to the company.
Does anyone know anything about its detection rates? Compared to ESET, Avira, Kaspersky for instance.
Final already before "Release"! Interestingly I downloaded that "New" and "Final" Version and got the messages that I had a newer version already installed. That's what is running on my system: Microsoft Security Essentials Version: 1.0.2140.0 Antimalware Client Version: 2.0.5612.0 Engine Version: 1.1.5101.0 Antivirus definitions: 1.67.166.0 Antispyware definitions: 1.67.166.0 So, it seems to be that the later "Beta" Version were already "Final"!
build 2140 was some leaked build that was more or less "mistake" in numbering. Remove it and then install final. Offical builds where 1407 (that was in fact newer by date then few days earlyer leaked 2140), 1500 (1501 was on connect for couple of hours before replaced with 1500) and now 1611 as final.
"The Security Essentials public beta also took fourth place in our recent roundup of free antivirus software. Microsoft Security Essentials beta detected 97.8 percent of malware in tests conducted by AV-Test.org" -PCWORLD
Strange because I installed th final one and I have this: Microsoft Security Essentials Version: 1.0.1611.0 Antimalware Client Version: 2.0.6212.0 Engine Version: 1.1.5101.0 Antivirus definitions: 1.67.178.0 Antispyware definitions: 1.67.178.0
Yeah I think so too. But I think that'll continue to use Avira also, MSE seems to not have heuristics support.
