I don't know how many of my friends and foes who have asked me now, but it's way more than a few now. It seems that Microsoft Update auto-enables it self on Vista after some time, even if the user chooses to disable it. How does one prevent that from happening?
Doing that would also disable Windows Update...which neither I or clients want to do. Windows Update = updates Windows. Microsoft Update = updates every single Microsoft applikation and/or service installed.
Win and MS UPdates Start Windows Update. Once loaded, in the left pane select CHANGE SETTINGS. At the bottom of the page there is a gray box entitled "To stop using Microsoft Update." Check the "Disable Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only" box. You should be good to go. Monk
That's just it - this setting doesn't stay permanent. For some odd reason, some update or program sporadically decides to activate Microsoft Update (thus updating everything, incl. services which shouldn't be updated), instead of updating just Windows. So how does one make this switch/permanent permanent?
Odd indeed That is odd, PlutoNash; I shall unleash my biker gang on the issue and report back shortly. EDIT: Do I assume correctly that you DO NOT wish to manually update, i.e., you wish to auto-update Windows Update but not auto-update Microsoft Update? Monk
there have been ongoing discussions about this and Windows Update auto opting you in. MS says this behaviour does not happen, even though there are numerous blogs and forum posts about this.
Bug Yes, and there are even some suggestions that MS has advised that this behavior is a "bug." Right I do not run Vista any longer so it's something I cannot test but I am searching for reg hacks to entirely disable MS update only. Monk
