I recently Upgraded my laptop to an SSD and was very impressed with the performance increase, so I thought I'd do the same to my Dell Inspiron 3847 desktop. I'ts an I-5, 8gb ram and had a Toshiba 1TB platter hard drive running Windows 7 Enterprise. I bought a Samsung 860 500gb drive and used Acronis to image the Toshiba C:\ drive and restore it to a 60gb partiton on the new SSD. Everything went fine, and the new SSD booted no problem. I then did some housekeeping and set up some other partitions and copied the Backup and Spare partitions from the Toshiba to the Samsung SSD. But one time when I re-booted the mouse froze. I figured it was maybe the mouse battery was fubar, but I then discovered that Num/Caps/Scroll lock lights were dead, and Ctrl/Alt/Del didn't work as well. I had to power the computer off, and re-start it. At the Repair Menu, I selected "Safe Mode with Networking" and the mouse worked again, as did everything else. Re-booted, and it was locked rotor again. Nothng worked. I had to power off and at the Repair Menu, I selected "Last Known Good Configuration" and that worked. The computer started right up and the SSD performed as if nothing had happened. I noticed that Aoami Partition Assistant had a "SSD Migration" option so I thought maybe Acronis didn't work 100% and let Aoami do it's thing. When it finished, the SSD started right up, and there were no problems the rest of that day. I figured that the migration process fixed whatever Acronis missed. But I was wrong. It wasn't fixed. The next couple of days the computer locked up randomly. Sometimes the "Last Known Good Configuration" worked, sometimes it didn't. Much searching on the internet didn't help. I replaced the CMOS battery, and manually reset all the BIOS options, and it didn't solve the problem. Random lockups continued. Then I got the bright idea to create a "Boot File" at the repair menu. It took a few re-boots but I think I narrowed down the problem but have no clue as to how to solve it. And I'm hoping one of the MDL experts can shed some light on what's happening. A successful boot creates a log file of 156 lines and is 17,336 bytes in size. A curious aspect of the good log files is that they are exactly the same size and have the same number of lines, the load order of some of the items is different. I have no clue as to why this is. An unsuccesssful boot creates a log file of 2,974 lines and is 378,488 bytes in size. The failed log file starts off exactly as the good log files and then attempts to load hundreds of drivers over and over. See attached pics. Along the way the failed logs show loading some of the same files as the good log files show, but then continue to load the @cpu.inf,%intelppm.devicedesc%, @oem16 through @oem24 and many more. What I dont understand is why when a "Last Known Good Configuration" option is selected, Windows doesn't use it all the time. When the computer locks up, it marks the ControlSet00x as failed. My only work around at this point is to F-8 into the repair menu and select the "Last Known Good Configuration" option to start up the SSD without having to worry about it locking up when Windows goes nuts and attempts to load 2700 lines of garbage, and then locks up. From my and other's experience the best bet is NOT to migrate from HDD to SSD, but to clean install on SSD.
I'd try downloading the .iso for whatever version of Windows you have installed, create a bootable USB flash drive using Rufus, then use the installation media to perform a boot repair. NOTE: I haven't had to do this for a long time, but if I remember correctly, on Windows 7 you must run boot repair three consecutive times in order for it to work properly. Running it just once will not work!
Don't make fun, have been replaced some hundreds of HDD-s with SSD-s, the last was a few days ago. Never haven't had any problems.

I agree that a clean install is your best option and after that you can copy your data off the Toshiba platter drive. Do Not copy partitions over to the SSD. You wrote: I think you moved a partition over that hosed your current set up
From what I have read they are already over provisioned but you can increase the size if you wan't. You should have just done full image of the hard disk to sata you ended up copying the partitions over anyway. On My Laptop I did a backup of my system drive with acronis and restored that to SSD and took out cd/dvd and the hard drive went in a cd/dvd caddy I had only used the cd/dvd once since i have had it and that was to make backup disks when I first got the laptop. P.S. Meant to say I have since done clean installation of windows once I integrated all my drivers into install.swm's
if you copy a NTFS partition (from a HD) to the SSD then you have just the HD Partition without over-provisioning (afaik) after this copy you have to setup over-provisioning for NTFS to get windows well (and safe) working
Maybe I should have said it a bit differently. I didn't move anything. I created the BAckup/Spare partitions on the SSD after the data was restored with Acronis and then a second attempt to migrate the 60gb boot partition using Aoemi. Then I used Windows Disk Management utility to create the 100gb backup partition on the SSD and copied the data from the Toshiba to the SSD. I did the same procedure with the Spare partition. Created it to the balance of the space left on the SSD and copied the files from the Toshiba to the SSD. .
"...I'm not keen on re-installing all my software..." Sometimes you have to, sometimes Windows become corrupted beyond repair... If you now make some small partition at beginning of Toshiba hdd, and reinstall some portable applications, you newer have to reinstall them again, that's just idea...
