Thank you for the response Kaljukass. Seems like the driver for device is there but the issue I'm having is that there's absolutely no option anywhere (systray, explorer) to safely remove the device. Something is most definitely missing somewhere but I'm not sure what it is. Has never happened to me before with this exact device. Also, all those other missing drivers are pretty useless, HP wireless button, webcam and stuff that I don't need so I just skip them.
You have a crap ton of missing drivers. If you go to windows update and see the optional updates, most likely everything is there, including that optional driver
@ceo54 It can be really quite tedious to search for them manually and most likely you won't even find many, but you might want to try IObit Driver Booster. It generally finds everything it needs, sometimes it rarely doesn't find something. What you install is your choice, nothing is automatically installed unless you want it to be. Also, almost all the time the full version is officially available. I myself have been using it for years, since the first version and until now everything has been 100% OK and correct. Besides, you can restore files, so you don't need to always search, unless you want to. The default settings are the last 3 versions will backed up, but you can change how many you want and where they are saved. You can restore them at any time, or if the newer driver doesn't work, you can go back to the older one and ignore the one that doesn't work etc.
Don't use stuff from IObit. Ever. Their software is bundled with tons of potential unwanted programs. If you need an automatic way to install drivers, consider snappy driver installer origin or windows update
Thank you kaljukass for your very insightful and on topic post. Cleary helped OP. I work in IT for 8 years now. Not a single good thing comes from that company. I've lost count of the amount customers with devices with performance issues that I've solved just by uninstalling software from iobit such as advanced system care But of course, you are free to use whatever you like. My paycheck supports your decision.

Try disconnect your WD external drive from your usb port, then uninstall your WD Driver then clean the registries by CCleaner tools. reboot your PC then do not insert your WD external drive.. Install the driver, reboot, then all up running, then plug in your WD External drive.. I already test my Windows 8.0 and 8.1 no trouble.. ATGPUD2003
