Hi, this is my first post on this forum so be kind, the problem I have is that on my 16.5" laptop screen (1920x1080) I have 5 rows of tiles on the Win8 metro screen but on my external 22" screen (1920x1080) I have 6 rows of tiles, I have checked and they are both on 1080hd res. anyone got any idea's why.
The number of tiles *per row is relevant to your screen resolution. From the start menu you can go to your " charm bar > settings > tiles " and enable more tiles per row. Additionally you can also edit the number of tiles per row using regedit. Code: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell\Grid Code: Layout_MaximumRowCount If doesn’t exist, create a DWORD (32-bit) Value Base = Hex Value 1is 1 row To restore any changes made to the registry, Code: REG Delete HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell\Grid /V Layout_MaximumRowCount /F taskkill /f /im explorer.exe start explorer.exe
Hi Noncentz705, have tried the registry mod but still only get 5 rows on the laptop screen. The screen res is the same as external monitor but the laptop just gives me the 5 rows.
This is a "feature" of "Metro" "Metro" has automatic DPI scaling that depends on your resolution and screen size, so you are limited by design, if you would see more rows on the tiny screen, everything else would be smaller as well. It's independed of your Desktop DPI setting and can not be customized.
Both screens are 1920x1080 full HD, so how does Metro know how big the display is if both on the same res ?
still think they could fit in more then 5 icons on a 17 inch, that seems a little bloated. @Huddie, maybe change the number of rows in the registry to 5 , so that your external display matches you're laptop.
Screen resolution & screen size both are different & window makes calculation based on both parameters. Size each tile small & then you can get more tiles. With "all app" option it shows more rows but don't know how to permanent that.
Thanks, that's a good idea, then at lest if I can't solve the laptop screen problem a lest they should both look the same. I will have to wait till I get home to try it out as I don't have the 22" with me at the moment.
There was a Debug function in early builds that allowed more tiles (1-2 depending on screensize/resolution), but was removed, the tweak posted in this thread never existed in the first place, this value is NEVER getting read but only written. You can check it with Process Monitor from Sysinternals. Apply Tweak, press View attachment 18962 +Q and then View attachment 18962 again to see the change or Restart Explorer.
OK Many Thanks to ALL who relied, I have downloaded and tried the little program you recommended, it seems I can restrict my external monitor to 5 tiles but can't get the laptop to give me six. Again many thanks to all who gave advice and help.
