Nice info. I always wondered this but never got around to dig the true meaning. Until now, I always thought the drivers were the same since Vista.
It seems to look like it is there for compatibility purposes to find the best drivers which match your devices. I have personally installed old drivers using 'Hardware ID' to identify the right ones where the latest coming from the manufacturers developed issues. My guess should be for better practice. Being dated could serve ranking process to find the right drivers for the system.
I doubt that should be the actual case. We're all speculating based on information we can collate - Like forecasters do.
