I have an older pc I want to put win 7 on. I ran the MS Win 7 advisory app and it is telling me that my 3com ethernet pci card is NOT compatible. Anyone have an idea of an inexpensive type that is compatible OR one that works with vista beings that means it probably will work with win 7??? TIA.

Intel Pro 100s usually go for cheap.

intel pro/100 or the 3com 3c905x mentioned above are the best and cheapest options.

    Agreed.
Jopplehead - first try it with Win7 and Vista drivers - they should work.

I would go for the $9.99 BestBuy special. No reason spending a ton of money on a NIC, I'm sure you can get a netgear or dlink or generic for pretty cheap online or in a store.

Heck I even saw NICs in Walmart

That's funny My system is also a socket 939 system. Actually an athlon 64 2.2ghz CPU a8v-MX asus. I have a different 3com card - 3CSOHO. I will give it a try before buying one. If it does not work will take the advice of the best buy deal :) Thanks guys and will let you know of the outcome when I get the chance to install the OS. :) Need to upgrade my ram to the full 2 gig also before trying this as it only has 1 gig currently. I guess it's obvious I won't be running 64 bit LOL.

OK I went with the following card and was tiotally detected and properly installed as soon as it booted. No loading of drivers by me was needed. I like this card: D-Link DFE-530TX+, got it for 15$ at office max :)
