I've just spent alot of time reading about all the different activation methods of windows 7. From all sorts of different loaders, to bios modding, to versions that are supposedly pre-activated, or cracking it while blocking the anti piracy updates. Not to mention all the different rtm, or rc, or ultimate versions, etc. Its just overwhelming, especially trying to figure out which info is most current.

Can anyone bring me up to speed and let me know what is the best and easiest , method of activating windows 7 at this point in time? (while still being reliable, updatable, and as permanent as possible). And could you point me in the right direction towards any further information about said method?

    Thanks.

PS: the motherboard would be ASUS M4A785TD-M EVO if that makes any difference.

Use a loader. You can download any one of your choice- Daz's, Omdhar's, whatever from this forum.

The easiest and safiest use Loader: Hazar or DAZ available here..

If you have the Guts try modded bios which already available work and tested for you if you want to:

    Modified bios ASUS M4A785TD-M EVO

Unless you are reasonably confident with BIOS flashing use a loader. Not that BIOS flashing is really difficult and works 99 + % of the time and a BIOS mod is a once only solution BUT if it goes wrong make sure you have enough reddies for a new board - paying to fix a bricked board will cost as much or more than a new one.

Daz's loader is probably the easiest choice at the moment, it'll show as genuine and get updates. However, Microsoft could block it in the future. If you want a solution that should work permanently, do the BIOS Mod as suggested by domatlapuk.

Basically, on this forum we all do OEM:SLP activation.. the same method companies use when pre-installing windows onto new computers.

They put a SLIC 2.1 table into the BIOS, also known as software licensing table. This is what a BIOS mod does, when your BIOS does not contain this table then someone can modify the BIOS and insert it. Once that is done you need an OEM:SLP key, you can find them here: http://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/10370-Windows-7-OEM-SLP-Key-Collection

The key must match the edition of Windows you installed. So for example, if you installed ultimate edition then you would need to use an ultimate OEM:SLP key. The manufacturer does not matter, though if you have an ASUS motherboard then it makes more sense to use the ASUS key, right? :)

After that is done you need to install the certificate that matches the SLIC table in the BIOS, you can get them here: http://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/5952-Win-7-amp-Server-08-R2-SLIC-2.1-Bin-Collection
A certificate is the file with the extension .XRM-MS

Usually the ceritficate is posted with your BIOS Mod, if not you'll have to get a matching one from that archive (theres a site and tool that checks if they match, they are on this forum somewhere).

Reboot and then BAM, it's done! It is also very very hard for MS to detect a BIOS Mod, so it is the best choice.

What a loader does is it installs the certificate and key, then replaces the bootloader with its own that makes the computer think there is a SLIC table in the BIOS. I may be a bit incorrect there, since I don't use loaders much.

Pre-Activated ISOs, stay away from these.. more often than not they will use outdated loaders. It is better to use an untouched RTM iso and just install the loader your self.

Thanks very much to all that replied, especially iNO12 with that detailed response, very helpful. I'm thinking the best idea would be the bios mod, afterall there is a bios recovery utility on that motherboard, and then keep the Daz loader idea on the back burner as a backup plan. I just have a couple more questions.

    1. It was mentioned that an untouched rtm iso is the best way to go, however when searching a popular area, it turns up with floods and floods of pre-activated ones. Anyone have any hints or keywords to include in the search to help more directly find a good untouched iso (preferrably ultimate) that will work with bios mod or daz loader?

    2. Should the bios be modded first before a windows install (like via a bootable usb dos drive, or motherboard utility), or do you have like the usual 30 day trial period to get everything squared away?

    3. Just to make sure, the bios mod simply inserts the slic table in the existing firmware, and doesn't interfere with any of the other features or functions of the motherboard right?

    Thanks.

    1. Untouched RTM is available in the repository.
    2. It is your choice, there is a 30 day trial period.
    3. Yes, it inserts the SLIC alone and does not alter any other features.

If you're comfortable flashing your bios, go that route. The people who mod bios here know what they're doing. Good luck.

I agree with Hazar, RemoveWAT is the best choice. its quick easy and works like a champ. Used it on at least 6 different machines (1 virtual and 5 not) and it works perfect. Even worked on a IMac woot! Thanks Hazar!
