Hey guys let me start the LONG story Bought a 2nd asus laptop with windows 8 installed - On the other asus laptop had windows 8 but upgraded to windows 10 and have a copy on disc. Back to the 2nd asus laptop... booted up check everything was in working order, got windows 10 disc out during the setup stage it seems I made a school boy error of formatting the partition that contained windows 8 and installed windows 10. But it wouldnt activate and I couldnt recover back to windows 8 so I am now getting copies using mediacreationtool but it doesnt seem to want to accept the product key thats in the bios which Ive managed to pull using keyfinder program. If I manually enter the key it says "This key didnt work, please check it and try again or try a different key" I have tried several options looking through google. If you guys need any more info let me know as I would like to get this sorted Thanks
Q1: Is the key for Windows 8 or 8.1? Q2: What edition? Q3: You wish to install Windows 8.* or Windows 10?
Thanks for the reply Windows 8 Came with laptop without any disc the windows badge just says windows 8. Windows 10 preferably At the moment ive managed to get windows 8.1 build 9600 on laptop but not activated. Least that what it says at bottom right hand corner of desktop.
You have got the embedded MSDN key, but do you know the edition it is for? Home, Pro, Single Language?
Am not sure. Ive been looking for something that will tell me this... do you know of anything that can check the key? I used belarc advisor and recover keys to get product key and got same result on key. Are these the right program

Good. This is Windows 8.1 Home edition. You can get a free Windows 10 Home edition. But we can get free Windows 10 Home or Pro easily. What edition would you like Windows 10 to be?
Really may I ask how you know its the home edition? is that what Core means? Home edition would be great Also is the quote result in above post correct as its not windows8 option you asked for?
I'll get right on that right away and report back on its success - thanks for all your help. This computer is for the good lady so she wont be using it the way I use my own laptop lol.
Attempted Way 2 of getting insider build that failed on entering Product key. Now trying Way 1 of installing windows 8.1 home
Way 1 didn't work either. upon entering key from bios - "this key didn't work, please check and try again or try a different key EDIT I used Windows media creation to get windows 8 and it installed windows 8.1 build 9600
Thanks for the above post. I cant use that as my windows wont activate using my bios key - reading the above needs windows to be activated (if am reading it right)
You can install Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate, and activate with Daz loader. Then upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. Or get GenuineTicket.xml from activated Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate to activate clean installed Windows 10 Pro.
To solved this issue.... When xinso mentioned windows 7. I had a paid copy of win7 already that i had forgotten I could use to upgrade to win 10. Activated win7 upgraded win 10 still didnt activate, so got onto microsoft support who then supplied me with a product key for win10. So thanks for all your help and replies
