    I set up 4 different PCs. 1)running Windows 7 2)running Windows 7 3)running Windows XP 4)running Windows XP 64-bit

Now, I can access and login between PCs 1 & 2, I can access and login PCs 1 & 2 from PC 3.

Attempting to login to PC 1 from PC 4 fails but I can access and login PC 2.
I receive an error message "Access denied - error code 0x80070035" when attempting to login to PC 1 from PC 4 without receiving a login / password dialog.

    What could be the issue?

How are you "logging in" to these machines ?

    (OP)
    Workgroup based for viewing files.
All the machines are co-located in the same workplace.

Usually caused by a NetBIOS service not running I think. Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

Also be sure you can ping PC1 from PC4. Other problems sometimes occur with firewall software and Norton 360 especially.

If it was a NETBIOS issue, how would you explain PC 3 being able to connect to PC 1 & PC 2 but PC 4 being able to connect to PC 2 and NOT PC 1?

Simple elimination rules this option out.

No they are not and shouldn't be as there are folders on PC 1 that are visible to certain users only.

Go into control panel and see if these settings are the same on both W7 computers.

    Code:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings
or maybe I'd wanna check if the W7 computers were in different network modes (home, work, and public).

Both of the Windows 7 PCs have the identical advanced sharing settings and belong to the "Work" network mode.

    Does RDP work

Can you remote desktop from computer 1 into computer 4 and vice versa.

Otherwise, why not try use Tools > Map Network Drive and connect using alternate credentials
