    Hi guys..

Earlier this year I got my new build under way.

    Asus Sabertooth Z77
    I5 3570K
    8 GIG DDR RAM

Been using some old SATA HDD's but now is the time to upgrade these.

Not sure weather to go SSD for my OS or just a fast 6gb\s SATA III HDD.

Thinking of getting a 3 TB 6gb\s HDD for storage.

Looking at the HDD I see the "CACHE" up to 64mb. I guess the higher the better. Is my thinking correct ?

Would an SSD be worth the money spent ? As anybody got and dealings with SSD or is a 6 gb\s 64mb cache HDD ok for an OS drive.

Yes my board has SATA III Ports..4 of them..

    Any thoughts..

Nice machine, have a similiar one here :good3:.

    Correct.

This is a good question. Battled with it here likewise. Depends on how you use your machine. Myself i have a lot of programs opened simultaneously, closing and stopping others, so i really enjoy my fast Windows now. It was fast before but now it seems to fly :cool2:.

    Thanks for those comments...

Yesss, my machine is coming along nicely. Bit by bit, Slowly now though. Money is getting tight.

Question though. What did you plump for in the end ? SSD or 6 gb\s HDD ?

I am no gamer. I get a lot of Photoshop usage and those type of photo and video editing apps.

Ended with a SSD here :D. Only games that stream lots of data would benefit from an SSD.

Have Photoshop installed on the SSD, it flies like charm. And i mean the flying literally :cool2:.

    Right.

    Sounds like a 3TB 6 gb\s HDD and a SSD then....

    Cheers..

Assuming you use Win 7 or higher, Windows configures normally all needed options when installed on a SSD, but better check, whether Trim is enabled, Alignment is set correctly and on Win 7 whether auto defrag is disabled.

Yep running W7 x64 as my main OS.

Cheers for those pointers. I have heard of TRIM but not really sure what it's all about though.

How much data are you currently storing? The cache will increase with drive capacity size .. A smaller capacity drive with let's say 16mb cache will be just as efficient as a larger cache higher capacity drive and sometimes more so

My OS drive is 5oo GB but around 116 gig is used up..

My current storage drive is a 1 TB. It has about 200 gig of spare room.

I remember when I got my first 250 GIG drive , I thought it was huge. Soon filled it up and bought a 500 gig drive. Soon filled that up.
I ended up with this 1 TB drive cause my mate bought it for his machine and could not get it to work. I tested one of my 500 gig drives in his machine and it worked fine. He said, fook it we'll swap...So I did..

I was gunna jump straight to a 3TB storage drive simply cause they don't seem much more than a 2TB. But If I am truly honest I don't really need a bigger one. But I would like a SATA III 6gb\s drive. Would fit my new build nicely.

I have decided to ditch buying two drives and just get a SSD and see how my machine runs. Then later on put in a larger storage 6gb\s drive.

As a rule I backup all my data to discs on a regular basis.
    There's another upgrade I would like, a Blu-ray writer..
