I just got a new 500GB SSD that i will be using to install my OS on. I use about 76gb of drive space. my music, pictures, and documents add additional 5gb to that. Should I change the location of my pictures, music, documents to my secondary 1tb HDD to save space? Any help would be appreciated. alucke
I would, all data including the DL folder moved to the 1tb drive. Any programs that are non-HDD intensive can also be installed to another drive. Keep anything that relies heavy on HDD with the SSD.
As was said, use the SSD as your main drive. I also recommend that you get a USB case for the 1TB drive you have and use it to back up the SSD.
Hi @aluck! IMO it will be best to use the HDD for mass storage data, like the mentioned pics, music, etc. because of two reasons: 1. You'll see no advantage in keeping such data on your SSD. Instead you can install whatever software you want there and take advantage of the faster loading times. 2. You'll shorten the lifespan of the SSD by downloading and deleting such information constantly. Additionally, I would go with a the dual storage configuration because I like the idea of having one drive for software and another one mostly for mass storage. Furthermore, that way you can write to one drive while playing from another without any lag. Hope this helps and feel free to ask any questions you may have.
question: even if the OP used this 500gb drive for storage as well as the OS, would the life span still exceed the life of his pc? I mean how many gb's per day can you write a an SSD before the memory gets all used up? (40 gb per day for the warranty life of the 850 pro SSD) The OP did not reference any particular brand names, but a 500gb Samsung 850 EVO drive is rated for an MTBF (mean time before failure) of 2 million hours, and a 10 yr warranty with the 850 pro, 5 yrs for the 850. When ssd's were very expen$$ive and very small....(My first 90 gb ssd was $160.) Then it really did matter to have a platter drive for storage but with today's larger and cheaper ssd's, We may not need that type of thinking now
<-- does some math on currently installed internal drive capacities on this machine..... Total - 25.92 Tb Free - 14.28 Tb Used - 11.64 Tb Those numbers do not include my external drives. Try fitting that on an SSD ? Of course YOUR mileage may vary.
I fail to understand your post. It has nothing to do with the op's post that states: I would think a 500gb ssd could handle that. Lack of planning on your part is not my problem
You have to use some common sense, You can not put tb's of data on any 500gb drive no matter if it's a platter drive or an ssd. I do video's and I have a 256 gb ssd. I also know that I can not possibly fit 6 tb's of video's on a 256 ssd so I have 2-3 tb platter drives for video I do not see your point, it makes no sense. If you do not recognize the size limitation of any types of drives then ....I simply do not know what to tell you I will tell again, the op states he is only going to use 76 gb of data on the drive. Of course it's silly not to understand that if you plan on using a much larger amount of data (your statement) you'll need a much larger drive. As far as I know, you can only get 3tb sdd drive's and I'm sure those are not cheap compared to a platter drive, so cost wise, then it is better to use a platter drive. I think you already know that and for some unknown reason your shoveling trolling me a load of s***t Do Not Feed The Troll.....
I do try. Technically if it is strictly text, then there is a good possibility of doing just that, assuming you know how to use compression. Of course I do realize there is a limit to that depending on the text. Then you DO understand what I meant. Whoops, I spoke too soon. Sigh... Read my post again and pay attention to the smilies.
