I have an old Compaq Armada M700 Laptop.

My mum was given it from an engineer when she left the bank a few years ago.
It came with a Windows NT Workstation manual and cd. However, my uncle put a fake copy of Windows XP Pro on it and it runs well.

My problem is I can't get updates/service packs so I cannot download the latest MSN or Internet Explorer.

I have a good desktop in my flat but the boyfriend hogs it hence why I want to use this for chat and the net.

I have read that it is possibile to upgrade from NT to XP, but how would I go about this?

    Any help would be fab!

Sounds like a VLK install with a blacklisted or keygen key in place. If you can access the laptop, right click on My Computer & choose Properties. When the System Properties box pops up, look in the middle for the Product ID.

It will be a string of numbers that appear like below without the X's:

    Code:
    XXXXX-640-XXXXXXX-XXXXX
If the number you see displays a number 640 through 649, then its an VLK install. All you need to do is change the Windows key to a genuine VLK key.

Post back if the above matches your PID value. If this value is different post the number you see.
