You should set Hardware Compatibility "15.x" when you install Windows Vista on VMware, or the guest OS will not function well.
So this is about installing an older version of VMware Tools on Windows VIsta? (11.0.6 is what comes with VMware Workstation / Player 15.5.7) I also have Windows Vista x64 virtual machines that I built quite some time ago. I still run VMware Workstation 10.0.7 (on Windows 7 Enterprise host) and 15.5.2 (on Windows 10 1809 LTSC host) (not 16 and 17 as the new features mostly only target Windows 11 which I don't use), and my Vista virtual machines are set at hardware level 10 and 11. There seems to be no point for me in using a newer version. Again, as far as I know features in newer versions mostly do not support Windows Vista anyway.
