Does anyone know how to keep Office (well, just Word) 2010 from slipping into reduced functionality mode every time you're writing? I've made all the necessary AV (Microsoft Defender) exclusions, I used a copy of the Microsoft Toolkit from this site and followed every instruction in the readme, and it still does it. It worked like a charm the past while, but then it keeps happening. I can still (at times) write (although some keys like quotation marks don't work like they should) and save, despite this happening, but I'd like to have it not happen, period. Is there anything I can do? And please don't tell me to just get a newer Office. Same crap happens with those (among other, non-related problems), and besides, Word 2010 opens the document I'm working on just fine, and it does what I need it to do outside of this issue.

I have the original Office 2010... but I DO NOT use it, I migrated to OnlyOffice which is much smaller in occupied space, runs on all operating systems and is opensource.

my sister, tho, uses my Office 2010 (it's original, for 3 PCs the license) and I was only able to make the original work by disabling the automatic update.

there is an update that starts to warn that Office 2010 should no longer be used, etc.

I really don't see any advantage in it... but try disabling Microsoft's secondary programs update in Windows Update settings...

    cheers!

On initial reading and based on the information you provided, may think that this is not a problem with Office, but with your system.
Of course, in case, if this is not at all a spam.

Do you know what could be causing this on a system level? I'm all out of ideas here.

In order to give any help or advice, we must first know absolutely everything about this system, but for now we only know your statement that something is not working and then sometimes it works again. On this basis cannot anyone say absolutely nothing.

As far as I can make out, my system works just fine otherwise. Windows 10, legit copy, latest updates, etc, etc. Windows Defender is my only AV. Everything else seems to work just fine, it's Office (well, Word, that's all I use) that doesn't. I have tried every trick in the book, keeps on happening.

I was using Word 2010 for a while recently, but then it started happening again. Using Word 2007 with mso.dll trick just now - happened again. When it happened in 2010, I could still type (although some keys didn't work right) and even save, but I couldn't cut, copy, paste, etc. When it happened in 2007, I couldn't even do that. I could just use 2010 and work around it, but it gets irritating 'cause the document is pretty big and it takes a while to save and another while to open.

I'd hate to have to reformat my entire system or whatever, especially when I plan on uninstalling Word after I'm done with my project. I only use Word because the free alternatives never work right - they butcher the document if they can even open it. I've tried scanning my computer, but haven't found any malware, etc. I've tried excluding everything I need to, so WD doesn't pick it up and flag it, but still it happens. As far as I can tell, other documents don't seem to have this problem, although I'm not on them long enough AFAIK to judge that accurately, it seems to always happen when I'm on this one document. And I really wish it'd stop as I've lost time that I should be spending on my project instead of googling nonstop for ideas. I can't be the only one that's dealing with this - why does it work for everyone else and not me?

Do you know what update that is specifically? If so, is it possible to uninstall it? I disable the automatic update when I first boot up Word 2010 for the first time.

Also, I already have disabled that option in Windows Update - have never had it enabled. Do you think I need to disable Windows Update entirely?

I just remember turning off the Office update, restarting and testing.

after restarting the Windows, Office stopped issuing alerts and started to work normally.

unfortunately I don't remember more details.

    cheers!

Well, if this problem only occurs with one document, it is wise to do it again and the problem is solved.
Although it seems to me personally that this problem is something else and much bigger.

Well, I installed Office 2010 via upgrading from 2007 and when the alert first popped up, I said no to all updates. Yet it still does it.

I don't get it - it activates just fine, works just fine, the key is valid just fine (I use an MDL source toolkit, and it uses a VL key that I was told on here was legit and hadn't been blocked by MS), but after X amount of time, RF mode hits. I don't get it - I used EZ-Activator option on Microsoft Toolkit 2.6.2 and it still does it. You'd think that'd be the end of it, an easy-peasy process, but no...

I've tried cutting/pasting the document in question to a brand new one, still doesn't work. And I have the same suspicion about it being something much bigger, but I don't know where to look. It just happened again to me on Word 2010 - it says Product Activated with a valid, volume key and yet it still happens. Oddly enough, if I open a new word document while my important document is saving (with everything greyed out), it opens up just fine, nothing greyed out at all.

From this story, Office 2010 is definitely faulty or problematic, because no version of Office can be upgraded, but you must always completely remove the previous version (including a full registry clean), then restart your computer before you can install another version. .
You said you didn't do the clean install, now it's time to do it.
Another thing you said was that you activated with a legitimate key and then that you used the EZ-Activator / Microsoft Toolkit. Very strange, but in this case, it doesn't matter how you activated it. There is probably nothing wrong with that. Your Office is simply incomplete or damaged due to incorrect installation. And in addition to the faulty Office, you may now have a large number of faulty documents that you have made with this Office or supplemented, repaired with this Office.
Office 2010 is not an update to Office 2007!
Reinstalling Office can help you, but it's not sure that it will help in any case, because I'm pretty sure your Windows itself is full of problems.
To remove Office, use the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant, and then use the CCleaner, for example, to clean the registry.
Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant is the only way to completely remove Office, and I do not recommend using any other tools or methods.

I would just add: download a new Office ISO and one that is 100% original, unmodified, untouched.

although I think you would be happier using other options, including some opensource ones...

See, that's what I don't get. I've done full registry cleans after uninstalling before, and I still ran into the same problem. I'm pretty sure I've used this Microsoft tool before too; I also have uninstalled through the toolkit and Control Panel. In this specific instance, I had 2007 installed, and when I tried to install 2010, it had an upgrade option also.

And I don't think my Windows itself is full of problems. It runs just fine otherwise. sfc /scannow, etc reveal no major problems.

I've used ISOs from archive.org or (recommended on) here. What is the best ISO you recommend?

And believe me, I would've stuck with one of the opensource ones had it not butchered my document upon opening. :(

    I used this tool...

    Code:
    heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-iso-download-tool

but today probably this site is better:

    Code:
    tb.rg-adguard.net/public.php?lang=en-US

I've never had compatibility issues with OnlyOffice, but I've had them using OpenOffice and LibreOffice.

make a copy of your document and try it... there is probably a portable version of the program... you won't even need to install it to test it.

    cheers!

I tried both, and neither work. The tool you mentioned first says that public downloads for Office 2010 have been pulled....
