Thanks. I was able to install the starter. Yes. But excel wouldn't work - "The program can't start because MSVCR90.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem". This was exactly the problem when I upgraded (via Store) from 8.0 to 8.1preview. I am running x64. Any suggestions, please?
Changing "3B C3 74 3E 3D 00" to "3B C3 EB 3E 3D 00" should disable the digital signature check for the executable. Changing "84 C0 74 10 56 56" to "84 c0 90 90 56 56" should disable the Windows Version check (so you can install it on 8.1). Thanks to Berny for this hack.
Try a clean install with windows 8.1 x86 or x64, install office with the patch then the update. It should work! or you can try to install MSVCR90.dll into the win32 folder
To re-install (clean) windows not practical. msvcr90.dll is available (many instances of x86 and x64) in winSxS folder. Could I copy it to System32 folder. (you have mentioned win32 folder). Please clarify. I tried placing the dll file in system32 folder (In fact, I tried the various versions of msvcr90 one by one , no success.) Then I tried "repair" option. - the excel starter was downloading files upto 99% and then same error. Word, picture manager and all other options are working perfectly. Excel is the only problem
First of all, thank you for your effort. Actually, after posting my query to you y'day. I googled too and I hit the same link that you have suggested. Sat late into the night trying each one of the steps shown there. No solution. Actually, I migrated from win7 to win8 and office starter was working perfect. When I upgraded to Win8.1preview, excel alone didn't load for the same reason. I uninstalled but reinstallation didn't go through. After applying your patch, installation completed without hassle but the problem of excel not loading persists. I have read almost all the threads and posts in this regard, but to no avail. But , I am still open to try suggestions from you and / or other members. Thanks once again.
just tested it on my main pc and confirming it does work on windows 8.1 Pro with Media center x64. Plus powerpoint viewer works. Also the ad blocking works fyi.

You don't patch 'Office.exe' file. You need to patch the installer file which is 'SetupConsumerC2ROLW.exe'. That is what will get you to successfully install Starter in 8.1, also you need to run it as Administrator.
Could someone please re-upload the patch or PM me with a link? Thanks EDIT - I think I've just successfully patched it with a hex editor, will try it out when I get home.
It's all working now - thanks for the people who posted the hex info. To summarise: 1. Install patched setupconsumerc2rolw.exe as administrator 2. Install click2run2010-kb2598285-fullfile-x86-glb.exe 3. Install officeadremover-setup-en-1-4--2013-09-16.exe
