On a system with a primary (SATA) drive with 200gb+ free and 32gb RAM (i7-3770k chip), is it better/more efficient to have the system manage the page file size, or to give it a set size (like 50gb)?

    Thanks!

System managed, unless you have a specific need to use it (unlikely with the amount of RAM you have)

With it system managed, how often does it need to be defragged?

I've never needed to defrag it

Pagefile might fragment after BSOD, as crash dump information is recorded in it* and then the remainder truncated. Next boot a new Pagefile appears that might be fragmented.

*Reason for using Pagefile is simple: It's the last file the OS has access to when it crashed.

I had one Win 7 that still loaded several programs slowly, but after running a boot defrag with Puran, I remember reading that the page file was fragmented. No more problems after that.

Sorry, I only discovered the problem a few days ago (not two years ago). The page file was system-managed but the system still booted and ran slowly. It was only when I ran a boot defrag using a third-party program that I found out that the page file was fragmented. The system ran faster after that.

@monkeylove: As far as I'm concerned, no apology is necessary. :)

I do it all the time. Sometimes, I'm the first to necro a thread.

OldSh*t teases me about it and we laugh (At least I do.)

Here's a (funny) example of my 'handywork' :sticktongue:

And here's another one. This one's a doozie! I tried to delete the post, but OldSh*t quoted it, so, there's no escaping the truth. :D

    No worries, my friend.

The only implication of "necro-ing" a thread is that the topic is irrelevant. What I discovered is the opposite: there's no guarantee that a system-managed page file will fix any problems leading to slowdown.

I'm only apologizing because I felt I didn't explain that properly in my previous post.
