I have a desktop that i installed win 8 on it. I then rebooted it. It showed the 4 blue boxes as it normally would but then all i see is a black screen. What could be causing this?

    thx

A lot of things could be causing this.
Did you toss a ham sandwich in your computer before turning it on?
You're not giving us much info to go on.

    What OS are you using?
What install media did you use to install it?
    Did you recently install drivers?
Did you recently install an A/V program?
What kind of computer do you have?

Win 8 and nothing else. School made the PC. What would prevent the letter O from appearing on my screen?

Don't know. You can try holding f8 during boot and see if it will let you go into the troubleshooting menu.

Check BIOS firmware Update for your Mainboard.

As LatinMcG told, go into Safe Mode and check the machine will start! If not, try to boot from USB or CD/DVD to see it could still boot normally!

In case you could boot in Safe Mode, uninstall the instralled Video Driver and reboot the machine normal to it it will boot up using the generic Video Driver of Windows than. If it does, download a new Video Driver and install that one.

Also, as mabaega suggested, update the BIOS to the latest version, special if the MB is older than a year. Windows 8/8.1 are sensitive about the right BIOS, to many changes were done with that OS's and that need to be taken in account!
