Hello all. My question was simple, it concern HYPERV servers. On a physical server hosting virtual machines is it useful to update the host server ????? This is perhaps a dumb question. Update VM was critical, but why update HOST ???? Thanks all for your response.
updating the host is important. do it outside office hrs. make sure the VM are off before you process the update and reboot the host.
Agreed. Not strictly necessary. Hyper-V will save any running VMs when reboot is initiated, and they will restore when it's complete. Of course the reboot itself will take longer because of the time required to save and restore VMs. There is a setting for each VM "Automatic Start Action" - stagger the startup delay time so they don't all try to launch at the same time.
Unless your hosts are isolated from ANY access (apart the management interface, which in some weird conditions could be on un-routable VLAN), then your hosts are exposed & without updates could be exploited with potential zero-hour or 0-day vulnerability So if you update everything else, why would you even consider NOT to update what is the most critical part of your infrastructure? sebus
